A bathroom renovation is one of the biggest and most significant projects in a home, both financially and in terms of everyday comfort. When the renovation is carefully planned, the end result is not only beautiful, but also durable and functional. Before you pick up a hammer or call in the professionals, here are a few important things to consider!
How much does a bathroom renovation cost?
The price tag for a bathroom renovation can vary greatly depending on how extensive the changes are. A small surface renovation, where only the fixtures and surfaces are replaced, can cost around 3,000–12,000 euros. If tiling is included, the price can rise to 15,000–35,000 euros. For more extensive renovations, where the plumbing is also replaced or structural changes are made, the costs can reach up to 50,000 euros (source: Geberit).
It's worth remembering that a large part of the costs is the labor. For example, waterproofing, tiling, and electrical work require professional work, and these are not worth compromising on.
Tip: Be prepared for surprises! Unexpected situations can arise during renovations, so it's a good idea to budget for an extra 10%.

Choosing tiles - learn about the features before making a purchase decision
Tiles are a key part of bathroom renovations, and when choosing them, it's worth considering their technical properties. The properties of tiles are described with symbols, which indicate, for example, color variation, anti-slip properties and wear resistance.
- The color variation is indicated by the V value (V1–V4) . The higher the value, the more differences in tone there are between tiles. For example, tiles in the V3 category can vary considerably in tone, so when choosing them, it is worth looking at several individual tiles before making a purchase decision.
- The slip resistance of the tile is important, especially in bathrooms . The slip resistance rating (R-rating) indicates the friction surface of the tile, which is important to consider, especially in shower areas.
-
Wear resistance is indicated by the PEI rating , which indicates how well the glazed tile withstands wear. Tiles with a PEI rating of 3–4 are generally suitable for floors where people also walk with shoes. (Italian tiles.)
Tip: Take a few tile samples home and look at them in different lighting, as the tone of the tile can change completely depending on the amount and direction of light.
Lighting affects the atmosphere and comfort of use
Lighting plays a big role in both the functionality and the atmosphere of a bathroom. For this reason, it is a good idea to take the time to plan your lighting and consider whether you want a fresh, bright light or a relaxing, dim atmosphere in your bathroom.
Good lighting makes a bathroom functional and comfortable. It is therefore worth planning lighting in layers:
- General lighting – for example, LED spots recessed into the ceiling provide even basic light.
- Spotlight – bright light placed around the mirror makes it easier to perform tasks that require precision, such as applying makeup or shaving.
-
Mood lighting – indirect LED strips behind cabinets or mirrors provide a softer, more relaxing light.
Tip: Consider lamps with a dimming function – this way you can adjust the brightness of the light to suit your mood!
A professional ensures a successful outcome
Bathroom renovation is not a project where you should cut corners. Although plumbing work does not require a permit, like electrical work, it is not worth taking risks with it. Incorrectly installed waterproofing or plumbing can lead to expensive water damage. When the renovation is done properly from the beginning, the end result will last beautifully and functionally for decades. It is recommended to turn to professionals both during the planning and construction stages, we are here for you!
